Does Teen Pregnancy still Carry the same Stigmas that it once used to have?

SCENARIO:  A young girl works hard throughout high school and earns the GPA to become her class Valedictorian.   However, a few months before graduation, she gets pregnant.  Some school board members and parents express concern and the Principal tells her she cannot deliver her Valedictorian speech due to the message some people feel it would send.   Do you think she should be able to regardless of if she's pregnant or do you agree that she shouldn't be able to serve as Valedictorian due to her pregnancy?

With time, many things have become more acceptable but does this include teen pregnancy?  Do you think that shows like MTV's Teen Mom glorify teen mothers or help shed light on a painful epidemic? What about stars like Fantasia and others in the spotlight like Bristol Palin? Do they help or hinder the fight against teen mothers or is there even still a fight?

  1. I used to think that passing out clean needles to intravenous drug users was enabling them and their addiction. I used to think passing out condoms to the youth in schools condoned and promoted teen sex. Now I understand that most people are going to do what they are going to do regardless...whether out of curiosity, experimentation, trial and error, peer pressure, rebellion, habit/addiction, by mistake, or by force.
So it is good and beneficial to have safeguards and resources in place, to provide options and opportunities when people do make questionable choices and decisions; or when they find themselves in trying predicaments.

So when a [young] single parents are facing the daunting task of raising a child or children relatively alone, it is good and beneficial to see successful single parents "make it" with dignity and pride. It is a inspiration and motivation to see parents who never give up and continue to nurture their child with love, care, correction, and responsibility. When certain shows offer the grim and gritty side of single parenthood, it can very well be a preventative measure and deterrent to those who are being careless with their sexuality and decision making.

I believe parenting shows on TV should weigh or offer the pros and cons of intimate relationships and sexual practices. They should also be informative with various alternatives and options to consider as well.

  2. As for the Valedictorian scenario, she should be the prime example of humanity and life; a more realistic view of the way the world is. She can represent the many young girls who get pregnant during their teen and college years or "before they are stable"...an example to persevere.
