I've been saying this for years. If there was a channel called WET (White Entertainment Television) we'd be marching from here to D.C. LOL
ReplyDeleteIronically, my last Discussion Assignment for my HIS 204 class was about the significance of "All in the Family" and "M*A*S*H". We were to look at the sexism, racism, socialism, class, and the political and/or religious aspects of these two shows in the 70's. What they represented and what messages they conveyed.
ReplyDeleteI spoke on how Archie Bunker got away with all his racist cantor just like shows and movies before then: Amos and Andy and all the Black Face and Minstrel depictions of Blacks; as well as how networks and the chief people in power and leading actors/actresses have been all or predominantly White with a White agenda. Blatant and subtle racism courses through US Government, Hollywood, Suburbia, Corporate America, Masonic Lodges, Churches, Schools, and Universities...and the Legal and Penal Institutions.....We are still hated, held, back, and discriminated against. Just the other day, Arizona vowed to disregard and no longer apply or recognize Affirmative Action. So when I hear Black comedians rip up Whites now, or when we have Black Awards shows, Black History Month, Black Caucus, BET and Black Radio; I do cringe and feel like we are too proud and forceful with our Blackness. Then I remember all their (Whites) work and laws to keep us as slaves, as servants, as second class citizens, and how the raped, tortured, lynched, burned, murdered, and denied us Freedom, Justice, Equality, and LIFE. So to hell with them being agitated and annoyed and jealous and envious and tired of us and our achievements in any era or area!
I love irking them but I do indeed hate when we do it stereotypically or savagely!I rather them see us shine academically; more than sports, music, and entertainment.
I seem torn 50/50 on the issue. Blacks can irk me by thrusting their "Blackness" or "Pride" in such a forceful, offensive, or imposing way. Or either screaming racism or them playing the race card.
ReplyDeleteYet, I understand that Whites do not have to put "White" in front of their events and venues, they just show you what they are about and how they run shit...what's exclusive to them. To them, their ways are a given. All their networks, channels, companies, movies, shows, programs, and events have been all White or for Whites without saying so. So sometimes I want us to boast our Blackness and our achievements and accomplishments in their faces. We need to show our worth...but why is it always sports and entertainment?
